Thread: N-600 or US Passport

Default Form N-600 or US Passport ?

    Hi Ron,

My brother just got his US citizenship on June 10th, 2009. He has three Kids of which the oldest was born on 4/30/1991, which means he is over 18 years by two months.! He has changed the spelling on his last name and totally eliminated his middle name. I have few questions that needs your gracious help.

    • Does his eldest Kid require to file form N-400 ? or just file for US passport?
    • Does he need to file form N-600 or just get a US passport for his other two Kids “they are less than 18 years” ?
    • He needs to change all three of his Kids last name to match his new last name as one family last name and totally eliminate their middle name. How does he do that? FYI – the Kids last name is different than his due to the system back home of recording names as first, father, and grandfather name as supposed to one family last name in the USA.
    • In applying for US passport for Kids. Should he provide their green card as proof of identification plus his US citizenship certificate?
    • If his Kids don't get a US citizenship certificate, how would they deal with any other government applications in the future?

Your answers and help in this matter are greatly appreciated.

    Thanks…

The eldest child must file an N-400 to naturalize. The other two children can simply file for US passports. They do not need N-600s. Since I don't know where he is from (and please don't send that information, I'm not going to research foreign law), he needs to provide some kind of reasonable explanation when he applies for their passports. Unexpired US passports are conclusive proof of US citizenship.
