Thread: Should I apply for naturalization?

Default Should I apply for naturalization?

    Here are the facts:
    1. Married to (now) a US Citizen, but she was not a citizen while my application for GC was being pursued through my employer.
    2. Laid off (October 2003) while GC application was over 180 days old, but still, the company agreed to keep me on payroll for an additional 6 months (till April 2004). Started to work as self-employed professional during this time. Joined a firm owned by my wife in November 2004 -- the field of work is same.
    3. Green card arrived in November 2004 even while I had pending I-130. Withdrew the I-130 after the GC arrived.
    4. I meet all qualifications for naturalization but am concerned that my self-employment before the green card came and after that may pose a problem.
    5. Have the cleanest possible record in every single way, have two masters degrees, and everything else is just perfect.
Are my fears baseless? Is there any reason to be concerned or should I just go ahead and apply.

Based on what you have written, I don't see any problems. According to the CIS, self-employment is perfectly accpetable if you port after 180 days.

Default Naturalized after using AC21 due to layoff before green card

Ron, let me share good news with me. I became a US citizen this morning. My employment history popped up only briefly just by way of confirming if anything on N-400 had changed. Otherwise, the interview was a breeze.

Ron, thanks again. After your response, I applied in early June and just about 4 months later, my case has been approved.
