One of my relatives is applying J1 visa for *15* days, sponsored by one of the universities in US with document from University that states that they are going to sponsor the complete trip. Are personal financial documents also *mandatory*? In fact does it makes sense to go for interview in absence of these personal financial support documents? And if visa is denied because of absence of these documents, how soon it can be applied again?

    Thanks!

No, the J1 certificate of eligibility should spell out the financial support arrangements. It isn't necessary for the applicant to show anything unless specifically stated on the certificate.
