Most certainly! My friend's name is on the disc that new horizons is carrying.

Also following http://dawn.jpl.nasa.gov/. I am sure you heard about the shiny stuff it found. Any speculations ;) on what it is ?

We had an office picnic and didn't clean up very well after. Any thoughts on the pyramid?

    hah.

I was not surprised by pyramids - if aliens could come to earth and build them then why not on ceres ;) "If you build it, they will come"

Lets see what is the next surprise ceres throws on us.

Perhaps that's why they shut down New Horizons on Saturday.

I think New horizon couldn't take it anymore and passed out of excitement. Technical bottlenecks were once again blamed for it though.

Good news is, this time they were resolved fairly quickly and it's now back up and running so 1 more week to go ...

Any thoughts as to what the three dark spots are? Unfortunately, they won't be on the side visible during the encounter.

I can only speculate - It should be something related to asteroid impact. They are hoping to see better images before and after the flyby.

I wish, for all the hard for and tremendous effort that has gone into this, they were able to land a probe. If only Pluto has a thicker atmosphere .. (I am sure there would have been many other challenges)

I'm sure there will be additional probes to Pluto and the Oort Cloud.

Could resist this :), its easier to go to Pluto than to do any immigration reform.

That launch took place in January of 2006. Today, NASA says the time it took New Horizons to get to the destination was "about one minute less than predicted when the craft was launched." The agency added, "The spacecraft threaded the needle through a 36-by-57 mile (60 by 90 kilometers) window in space — the equivalent of a commercial airliner arriving no more off target than the width of a tennis ball."
    """

    Very cool

Good to see you are still following it.

Just an interesting tidbit I found the other day.

Since the bandwidth is pretty low ( it takes 4.5 hours to beam stuck back ) And this download is competing with other DSN projects And we only have 3 dishes in the world that can receive this data; they applied a trick where it will first send highly compressed gallery sheets of all the images and few pre selected ones, and then they are going to select which ones they download.

I'm pretty sure the array at Goldstone can take it.

Come to think of it, some of our immigration journey's started before New Horizons. It flew 3 Billion Miles, and we are right where we started :)

That's not true. We have been busy running around sun while trying to do our share of paperwork. ;)
